Some thoughts on this model
Importantly, this example is a very early home market 1961 Jaguar E Type 3.8 FHC " Flat Floor", chassis # 860087, thus the 87th car assembled. It was supplied via the Birmingham dealer P.J. Evans on 22nd December 1961 to its first owner, Oxfordshire Motor Rewinding Company.
If we fast-forward quite a few years, a well-known collector was on the lookout for a good car to restore, evidently it needed to be matching numbers and as much as possible genuine. Fortunately this particular the car was located, deemed eminently suitable and subsequently purchased.
Restorations of any kind are a labour of love and invariably cost far more than originally budgeted. In addition, it’s also hugely difficult to find an available slot with the relatively small number of renowned marque specialists as they often have years of work already booked in. So not only are you now managing money, which tends to disappear at an alarming rate, but you are also managing time too, which for most is a scarce commodity.
Evidently this gentleman had both deep pockets and an abundance of time as the ensuing total restoration took something approaching 2 years and cost, I understand, more than £280,000.
The finished product is simply outstanding as there restoration has been executed with absolute precision with an exacting attention to detail. Faultless shut lines and panel gaps are certainly hard to achieve, and all on this car are perfect. Equally the metal work where the eye cannot see is beyond reproach. The car is finished without flaw in Sherwood Green and internally beautifully upholstered in Suede green leather.
Very importantly for an original “Flat Floor”, it retain sits welded bonnet louvers, straight rear bulkhead, bellows brakes and limited-slip differential.
Specification now completed it importantly remains unaltered from new, apart from a couple of discreet and sensible upgrades, namely a high-torque starter motor, enhanced cooling fans and modern headlights.
There is a complete photographic record of all the work undertaken and pleasingly a bespoke handbook, really a pictorial unique to the car. Here we have an immediate opportunity to step into a rare and faithful Flat Floor E Type that is in Concours condition.
